Terms of Service

These are the terms on which AuthorsLab offers you access to its platform. Please read them. They're written to be understood, not endured - but they are a legal agreement, and they matter.

By creating an account, you're agreeing to these terms. If you're using AuthorsLab on behalf of a business or organisation, you're agreeing on their behalf and confirming you have authority to do so.

1. About us and these terms

1.1 AuthorsLab is operated by [Legal entity — confirming with co-founder], a company registered in England and Wales (company number [Pending]), registered address [Pending] ("AuthorsLab", "we", "us").

1.2 These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the AuthorsLab platform, available at authorslab.ai and associated subdomains (the "Platform"), and any services provided through it (the "Services").

1.3 Our Privacy Policy (authorslab.ai/legal/privacy) and Cookie Policy (authorslab.ai/legal/cookies) are incorporated into these Terms by reference.

1.4 If you do not agree to these Terms, do not create an account or use the Platform.

2. Eligibility

2.1 You must be at least 18 years old to use AuthorsLab. By creating an account, you confirm that you are.

2.2 You must provide accurate information when you create your account. Using false information is a breach of these Terms.

2.3 If you are accessing the Platform on behalf of a publisher, literary agency, or other organisation, you represent that you have the authority to bind that organisation to these Terms.

3. Your account

3.1 You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure. We recommend using a strong, unique password and not sharing your account with others.

3.2 You are responsible for all activity that takes place under your account. If you become aware of any unauthorised access, notify us immediately at support@authorslab.ai.

3.3 Each account is for a single individual user. You may not transfer your account to another person.

4. The Services

4.1 What AuthorsLab provides

AuthorsLab provides a platform through which authors can:

  • upload and manage manuscript content
  • receive AI-assisted editorial feedback through named personas (Alex, Sam, Jordan)
  • work through publishing preparation with persona Taylor
  • develop marketing plans with persona Kai
  • maintain a companion relationship with persona Riley throughout the process
  • create AI-generated cover image drafts
  • export formatted manuscript and marketing files

4.2 Nature of AI editorial feedback

The AI editorial personas on AuthorsLab are tools to support your writing process. They are not human editors, literary agents, or publishing professionals, and their feedback does not constitute professional advice of any kind. You are always the author. Every decision about your manuscript - whether to follow a suggestion, ignore it, or do something entirely different - is yours.

4.3 Private preview

AuthorsLab is currently in private preview. During this period:

  • features may change, be added, or be removed without prior notice
  • the platform may experience downtime or instability
  • access may be limited or invitation-only
  • we make no uptime commitments during the preview period

We will give reasonable notice before transitioning to paid tiers.

4.4 Planned features

Some features described on our website - including the ability to invite a named publisher into specific publishing and marketing surfaces of a book project - are planned but not yet available. We'll announce when they launch.

5. Your content

5.1 Ownership

Your manuscript, your words. You own all content you upload to AuthorsLab, and you own all AI-generated outputs produced within your account (editorial notes, cover images, marketing plans, formatted files). We claim no intellectual property rights in your work.

5.2 Licence to us

To provide the Services, you grant AuthorsLab a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, process, and transmit your content as necessary to operate the platform. This licence exists only so we can provide the service to you. It does not give us the right to reproduce your manuscript outside the platform, share it with third parties (except as described in our Privacy Policy), or use it for any purpose beyond operating AuthorsLab for your benefit.

5.3 AI-generated outputs

AI-generated content (editorial suggestions, cover images, marketing copy) is created using AI models operated by third parties (Anthropic and OpenAI). The intellectual property status of AI-generated content is an evolving area of law. We assign to you whatever rights we have in outputs generated in your account, but we cannot guarantee that AI outputs are free from third-party intellectual property claims or that they will be protectable as copyright in all jurisdictions.

5.4 No training use

We do not use your manuscript content to train any AI model, internal or external. API calls to Anthropic and OpenAI are made under commercial agreements that prohibit those companies from using your content for model training.

5.5 Responsibility for your content

You confirm that you have the right to upload any content you provide to AuthorsLab - whether that's your own original work, content you've licensed, or content that is in the public domain. You are responsible for ensuring your content does not infringe third-party intellectual property rights.

6. Acceptable use

6.1 You agree to use AuthorsLab only for lawful purposes, in accordance with these Terms.

6.2 You must not use the Platform to:

  • upload content that infringes anyone's intellectual property rights
  • upload content that is defamatory, abusive, threatening, discriminatory, or otherwise unlawful
  • attempt to reverse-engineer, scrape, or extract the platform's underlying technology or AI models
  • probe, scan, or test the security of the platform
  • use the platform to generate content designed to harass, harm, or deceive specific real people
  • impersonate any person or entity
  • use automated tools to access the platform in ways that strain or damage our infrastructure
  • use the platform to generate content that violates applicable export control or sanctions laws

6.3 AuthorsLab is designed for literary fiction and non-fiction manuscripts. We reserve the right to suspend accounts that use the platform for purposes clearly outside its intended scope, at our reasonable discretion.

7. Subscriptions and payment

7.1 AuthorsLab operates on a subscription model. During private preview, access may be free or by invitation. Details of paid tiers and pricing will be published on the pricing page at authorslab.ai/pricing before they take effect.

7.2 Subscriptions are billed in advance - monthly or annually, depending on the plan you choose. All payments are processed by Stripe.

7.3 Cancellation. You may cancel your subscription at any time from your account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period. You retain access to the platform until that date.

7.4 Refunds. We do not routinely offer refunds for partial subscription periods once a billing cycle has begun. If you believe you have been charged in error, contact us at billing@authorslab.ai and we will investigate promptly. Nothing in this clause affects your statutory rights.

7.5 Price changes. We will give you at least 30 days' written notice before increasing the price of your subscription. If you do not wish to continue at the new price, you may cancel before the increase takes effect.

7.6 We reserve the right to suspend access to the platform if payment fails and the issue is not resolved within 14 days of notification.

8. Intellectual property - the platform itself

8.1 All intellectual property in the AuthorsLab platform - including the software, design, AI personas, names (Alex, Sam, Jordan, Taylor, Kai, Riley), the AuthorsLab brand, and all underlying technology - belongs to AuthorsLab Ltd or its licensors. Nothing in these Terms transfers any of that to you.

8.2 You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, or create derivative works from any part of the platform or its content (other than your own content) without our written permission.

9. Publisher access

9.1 A forthcoming feature will allow you to invite a named publisher to access specific publishing, cover design, and marketing surfaces of a nominated book project on the platform.

9.2 Any such invitation is issued entirely at your discretion. Publisher access is limited to the surfaces you open and the book you specify. Publishers cannot access your manuscript in draft form, your AI conversation history, your Author Studio, your Library, or any other book project.

9.3 You may revoke publisher access at any time. We will implement revocation promptly.

10. Confidentiality of your work

10.1 We understand that an unpublished manuscript is often your most commercially and personally significant possession. We treat your content accordingly.

10.2 We will not share your manuscript or AI conversation history with any third party except:

  • as necessary to operate the platform (passing excerpts to Anthropic/OpenAI for processing)
  • with a publisher you have explicitly invited, limited to the surfaces you specify
  • as required by law

10.3 Our employees and contractors who have access to user data are bound by confidentiality obligations.

11. Disclaimers and limitations of liability

11.1 "As is" provision. The Services are provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis during private preview. We make no warranties - express or implied - about the accuracy, completeness, or fitness for purpose of AI editorial feedback, cover images, marketing suggestions, or any other outputs generated by the platform.

11.2 AI outputs. AI is a creative and editorial tool, not an infallible advisor. We do not guarantee that editorial suggestions are accurate, appropriate, or free from error. You retain full responsibility for your manuscript and any publishing decisions you make.

11.3 Uptime. We will use reasonable endeavours to keep the platform available. We do not guarantee any specific level of uptime, particularly during private preview.

11.4 Limitation of liability. To the maximum extent permitted by law:

  • AuthorsLab's total liability to you for any claim arising under or in connection with these Terms shall not exceed the greater of (a) the total subscription fees you have paid to us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or (b) £100.
  • AuthorsLab shall not be liable to you for any indirect, consequential, incidental, or special loss - including loss of profit, loss of anticipated savings, loss of business opportunity, or loss of data.

11.5 Exceptions. Nothing in these Terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded by English law.

11.6 Consumer rights. If you are an individual using AuthorsLab for personal, non-commercial purposes, you may have statutory rights that cannot be excluded or limited by these Terms. Nothing here affects those rights.

12. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless AuthorsLab Ltd, its officers, employees, and contractors from any claim, loss, liability, or expense (including reasonable legal costs) arising from:

  • your breach of these Terms
  • your content infringing any third-party intellectual property rights
  • your unlawful use of the platform

13. Termination

13.1 Termination by you

You may close your account at any time from your account settings or by emailing support@authorslab.ai. On closure, we will begin the deletion process described in our Privacy Policy.

13.2 Termination by us

We may suspend or terminate your account if:

  • you materially breach these Terms and fail to remedy the breach within 14 days of written notice
  • you breach any provision of these Terms that is not capable of remedy (for example, use of the platform to infringe third-party rights)
  • we are required to do so by law

We may also terminate accounts immediately in cases of serious misconduct.

13.3 Effect of termination

On termination:

  • your access to the platform ends
  • you may request a copy of your content within 30 days; after that period, we will delete it in accordance with our Privacy Policy
  • payment obligations that have already accrued survive termination
  • Sections 5 (your content and IP), 8 (our IP), 11 (liability), 12 (indemnity), 14 (disputes), and 15 (general) survive termination

14. Disputes and governing law

14.1 These Terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.

14.2 If a dispute arises between us, we'd like the chance to resolve it informally. Please contact us first at legal@authorslab.ai. We'll aim to respond within 10 business days.

14.3 If we can't resolve a dispute informally, it shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales - except that:

  • if you are a consumer resident in Scotland, Northern Ireland, or another part of the UK, you may bring proceedings in the courts of your home jurisdiction
  • if you are a consumer in an EU member state, mandatory consumer protection laws of your country of residence may apply and you may have the right to refer the matter to the relevant EU authority or use the EU Online Dispute Resolution platform

15. General

15.1 Entire agreement

These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and AuthorsLab with respect to the Services.

15.2 Variation

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll notify you by email at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use of the platform after the effective date of new Terms constitutes acceptance.

15.3 Severability

If any clause of these Terms is held to be unenforceable, the remaining clauses continue in full force.

15.4 Waiver

Our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms does not constitute a waiver of that right or provision.

15.5 Assignment

We may assign or transfer our rights and obligations under these Terms to any successor entity (for example, in connection with an acquisition). We will notify you if this happens. You may not assign your rights under these Terms without our written consent.

15.6 Third-party rights

These Terms do not create any rights under the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999 that are enforceable by any person other than you and AuthorsLab.
